One Night Only – Newcastle Carling Academy 18.02.08 Already highly tipped as a band to watch in 2008, Helmsley's One Night Only are the latest band to benefit from Myspace exposure.
Beginning as a tribute band in 2003, and supporting The Pigeon Detectives last year certainly broadened their fan base, and now they're touring round the country as headliners for their February tour.
Taken in small doses, One Night Only are a decent enough indie proposition. Their unique sound blends intricate guitars with synths, keyboards, pounding rhythms and melodic vocals.
The band have an awfully large amount of stage presence and get the crowd dancing like crazy, as the support bands seemed to have failed in doing this. Lead singer George Craig seems to be having the most fun, wrapping his lips around the melodies and shouting out the occasional "oh oh oh".
The stand out track had to be 'Just for Tonight', it's anthemic, joyful and everyone was singing along, but it's far from exciting or groundbreaking, but lets not be too negative. As they strive through their set list you begin to realize that One Night Only are really striving to do something different, and are trying to stand out from the current indie-pop bands. However it comes to mind that this might take a lot work and or a lot of time, but at the end of the day One Night Only put on a slick, polished, and well sounding performance.
