Unfortunately I could not witness all off this NewBlood gig but thankfully I did arrive in time to see the fabulous Black Alley Screens, a truly superb band from across the sea (Northern Ireland). The trio were young in years compared to some of the recent acts that have played at NewBlood but definitely rank as one of my favorites. A variety of contrasting songs with driving beats and really strong singing were pounded out for a good half hour, much to the delight of everyone listening. For only three people they had a powerful sound, at times emulating similarities of the Arctic Monkeys but definitely making each song their own. Well rehearsed, I could not find any faults with the performance and timing. Decky McKay makes an awesome front man, knowing how to engage a crowd and keep things flowing between the tunes. Their songwriting skills are impressive with tunes such as The Camera Never Lies and Sex Cells coursing with tension and varying textures; Common Crisis even featured a neat bit of slap bass! Out of all of the bands I have seen recently these boys have to be the ones that I would pay to see (and anticipate seeing making waves) in the future.
