On the 7th March, Emilie Autumn and her backing members The Bloody Crumpets paid a visit to Newcastle and I was very lucky enough to see her.
The day began when a friend and I travelled to Newcastle, by train and arrived in the afternoon. As we had very little money (and also dressed as a Victorian and a Pirate), we decided to queue up very early (So early we were the only ones there!). Whilst sat outside the 02 Academy doors, it was easy to spot who the fans were, as almost everyone was dressed up. After an hour or so, a few more fans turned up and meant we had some people to socialise with to kill time.
After almost 5 hours of queuing up, the doors to “The Asylum” finally opened, and my friend and I were fortunate enough to get right up to the barriers. Whilst the stage was being set up the crowd was privileged enough to listen to: Circus music and music taken from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.
The show began with Autumn’s “Band Members” The Bloody Crumpets: Veronica Varlow, Contessa, Aprella and Captain Maggot, entering the stage one by one and finally a masked Emilie Autumn entered the stage after singing half of the introductory song “4 o’clock” behind a white screen only showing her shadow.
During the show, there was fire eating, fire hoola hooping, stilt walking, feather dancing, crowd surfing and even The Crumpets were kind enough to spit “Tea” in our face. Autumn’s shows mainly revolve around theatrics, circus tricks more than the songs themselves. However, as enjoyable at the show is it has a message, Autumn wants the crowd to be aware of the abuse that she went through whilst she was in a mental institution and that it still happens in some institutions today.
Overall, Emilie Autumn’s concert was possibly one of the most entertaining concerts I have ever been to, and I am very excited to see her again when she returns to the UK.
