Goldie Lookin Chain are a comedic rap music group based in Newport, Wales. The group produces humorous, controversial and often explicit songs that satirize hip hop, today's consumer society, the “chav” culture and life in general. Opening with Half Man Half Machine the band seem to get off to an alright start with catchy guitar riffs and a chant-along chorus setting the tone, however their performance was leading to anything but progression. The band resembles a shindig complete with inappropriate DJ, a few beers too many and a relative that grabs the mic, slightly swaying performing their own rap. If this kind of event is your idea of a good time then, you're probably fine to keep listening. This was exactly what Newcastle had in mind and roared with laughter at every interval and danced along to every song. Everybody else seemed to get it their crude humour banter but I certainly didn’t. On the other hand their x-rated commentary on today has actually earnt them a number of high-charting singles, surprisingly. The nearly full venue was bouncing throughout and the floor was vibrating to the dreadful beats they call hip-hop as they flew through their set. They played chart topping Guns Don’t Kill People Rappers Do as the encore and the crowd went wild. What's important to remember, however, is that music and humour are difficult to combine and get it right. Goldie Lookin Chain have tried, and been reasonably successful at raising a smile in the past.
