A Silent Film – Newcastle Carling Academy 08.09.08

5:06pm Tuesday 23rd September 2008

Oxford quartet, A Silent Film are a grandiose spectacle of contemporary British song writing. Live and on record they sound very much alike to Coldplay complete with vocal echo pedal, grand accumulating chords and an atmospheric piano- with a backing sound borrowed from early trance music, accompanied by an indie edge. The Academy wasn’t full but this band had the biggest audience of the night and as soon as they bounded on stage the crowds eyes stayed permanently fixed on this remarkable band. They played some old songs but left plenty of time to perform tracks from their new album “The City That Sleeps”. The atmosphere was magical with the modern indie trance distortion, superb piano melodies and the subtle racing energy that glides straight into you. The lyrics are skilfully constructed tales of love, loss and the human condition to racial divides and the anguish of war in modern society. They’re are unique and they bring that forward in the way they play and chat to the audience, they have a different more refined stage presence than any other band.
