CLOVERFIELD
This is the 2008 film that has breathed new life into the monster movie genre. Filmed entirely on a hand held camera, the film shows a group of young adults as they attempt to survive an attack on New York. The marketing campaign for the film didn't give any of the plot away, with posters showing the decapitated statue of liberty and trailers showing the head landing in the street. Another factor that has helped with the success of the film is that the monster in not shown. This has led to interest and speculating about what the film is about, causing more people to go and watch it.
With none of the plot been given away, people went in to the cinema without bias. They will not have read the plot or other peoples thought's on forums, so are forced to make up their own minds. The film starts off establishing Rob, and showing clips of his going away party. This is interrupted by the attack and causes everyone to flea to safety.
An interesting mix of suspense and humour (through Hud, the camera man), giving enjoyment to a diverse audience. In most films I have seen, the fear aspect comes from sudden shocks, making you jump. CLOVERFIELD doesn't rely on sudden jolts or soundtrack; it has you shaking with anticipation, wondering where the monster will attack.
Overall I think this movie is a must see to all film fans. 9/10
