THOUSANDS of families gathered in County Durham this weekend for a super-hero themed event run by the emergency services.

Police squad cars, fire engines, an aerial platform, police dogs and blood bikes were some of the attractions on offer at the free family fun day at Shildon's Locomotion National Railway Museum.

The event was hosted by Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner, Ron Hogg, with the aim of bringing communities and emergency services closer together.

“It’s been absolutely fabulous,” he said. “We have had the company of lots of kids and families and that’s what it’s all about, local people making that connection with our emergency services.”

Famous faces from Channel 5’s Police Interceptors television show proved popular with both youngsters and parents who queued for pictures and an autograph.

Kirsty Trotter, who visited the event with her two sons Riley, seven, and Caleb, three, said: “We watch the interceptors on the TV and as soon as we saw them today the boys recognised them.

“They love all things cars and fire engines so this is a brilliant event to bring them to.”

Adam Hall, Bishop Auckland Fire Station manager, added: “We have thoroughly enjoyed supporting the event today and giving the public an insight into what we do and the equipment we have.

“The aerial platform has gone down very well with those who are brave enough have a go and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the grounds.”

About 20,000 people visited the Celebration of Superheroes event.

Mr Hogg said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the Locomotion, staff here have been absolutely fantastic and have helped us make the day a success.”
