IT was brilliant to see two Union flags on the podium at the end of the Tour de France. Congratulations to Geraint Thomas, the winner, and Chris Froome who came third.

It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with pleasure seeing them.

The training, self sacrifice, dedication, energy, effort that is put in to push the pedals around at speeds of up to 45mph, up the mountains or down them. There is no other sport to compare with cycle racing. You can see that on the competitors’ faces at the end of the races.

Cyclists work as a team, just like all other team sports. When accidents happen they get up, put on the sticky plasters, brush themselves down, get back up on the bike, and off they go. No feigning from these sportspersons, unlike some other team games.

I regularly cycle myself. I’m in my late 70s and my advice is "Get on Yer Bike" and enjoy it.
