IT was a delight to attend the Yorkshire Day celebrations in Redcar on August 1, organised by the Rotary Club and the Yorkshire Ridings’ Society.
Going by the support for the event, it’s obvious the people of the borough of Redcar and Cleveland remain loyal to Yorkshire, despite the vagaries of endless local government reorganisations.
Redcar & Cleveland council took the wise decision to replace the European drapeau, which for far too long has fluttered irritatingly outside our Redcar HQ, with the flag of Yorkshire, complete with iconic white rose.
Since we are about to quit Europe, I hope we councillors can agree to continue to fly the Yorkshire flag alongside the Union Jack and the flag of the borough.
Let’s finally consign the EU’s uninspiring banner to history, where it rightly belongs.
Steve Kay, Redcar & Cleveland Councillor, Moorsholm
