CAMRA believes the main causes of pub closures are beer duty, business rates and VAT.
The British Beer and Pub Association blames lifestyle changes, owing to the massive price differential between beer and lager in the pubs, as opposed to the supermarkets and off-licences.
Surprisingly, neither makes much of the breathalyser, the smoking ban or the recent government campaign against alcohol. All significant factors.
On the bright side, in my home village of Moorsholm, where the Toad Hall Arms closed some time ago, the cricket club has obtained a licence and, thanks to a great team of volunteers, is going from strength to strength.
Every cloud has a silver lining.
