DESPITE its long coastline, Redcar and Cleveland’s expansive beaches have not received a single international Blue Flag or UK Seaside Award for safety and environmental excellence.

When you consider 30 awards were handed out to beaches along the Yorkshire and North-East coastlines, and the fact that Redcar and Cleveland promotes itself as “On the Yorkshire Coast”, it is most surprising that at least one of our beaches did not reach an outstanding rating.

The residents of Saltburn, in particular, must be mortified because they have made herculean efforts to keep their beach clean and, along with Marske, recently received the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Coastlines Award. And, I know that Northumbrian Water, along with the council and the community, have done their damnedest to eliminate water pollution.

Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Seaton Carew, Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington all received awards. Why not Redcar? Why not Marske? Why not Saltburn?
