I FEEL so sorry for the poor shift workers trying to sleep. I write this at 7.25am and the council workmen are outside mowing the grass, followed by the man with the noisy windblower clearing the paths.

It’s now 9.40am. The grasscutters and the windblowerman carried on until 9.10am – they did have a quick, quiet break at 8.05am – and were followed ten minutes later by the binmen, who came ran and made more noise for 20 minutes.

Now I’m waiting for the scrapman – he’ll be round soon, shouting from afar!
