FURTHER to the Budget front page headline ‘Sparks fly’ (Echo, Nov 23) highlighting the £123m for the redundant Redcar SSI steel sites.

Some could be confused as local Labour politicians contradict each other on the money allocation, as to whether the £123m is all new money or recycled via previous announcements.

Notwithstanding the internal and external political debates, many will be glad that there is money going to these redundant steel sites in and around Redcar.

Plus to hear Chancellor Philip Hammond actually mention the area and the Tees mayor in his speech is a refreshing change.

With £337m going to renew the dated Tyne and Wear Metro rolling stock and £600m over 30 years for a new combined authority for Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland, then maybe the Conservative government are at last attempting to tackle the North / South divide.
