SEAN TOPHAM, an inmate of HMP Frankland, was on suicide watch and being cared for by a conscientious, dedicated prison officer upon whom he took the opportunity to launch a savage, cowardly attack, using a homemade dagger. (Echo, Nov 4).

As a result the officer has left the service, having suffered permanent physical and psychological damage.

So, can anyone tell me why Topham was on suicide watch?

Supposing he had killed himself – who the hell cares? Most including me, would say “Good riddance.”

I don’t think prison officers get anything like the support and appreciation they deserve.

Theirs is one of the most difficult, dangerous and thankless jobs that there is.

Also, considering what they have to put up with, probably one of the most underpaid.
