MY husband has dementia and is in a nursing home. He was due to be assessed for his continuing case.

I was pleased to be given three weeks’ notice of the meeting as my family live away, and this gave them time to arrange a day off work etc.

You can imagine then how surprised I was to be told on the morning of the meeting it was to be cancelled as they had not told my husband’s social worker about the meeting.

The meeting went ahead with a social worker who had little knowledge of my husband’s case.

Despite him having no cognitive awareness, being doubly incontinent, limited movement and unable to feed himself we were told he does not qualify for free care.

As a family we realise he did the wrong thing by working, if he had just claimed benefits his care would have been free.

I wonder how many other families feel the same.
