WHILE Theresa May has finished with egg on her face after calling an ill-judged election, let us not forget that by having an EU referendum David Cameron set the wheels in motion for what could have serious implications for the United Kingdom.

Immediately after the election Mrs May increased the unemployment figures by sacking her two aides.

But let us not forget that the Tories fought to the last man.

After going down in Canterbury, a seat held since the First World War, they valiantly tried to hang on in Kensington, where it was rumoured they had been in power since the Battle of Hastings.

After the first count Labour came out on top by 50 votes.

The resultant re-count reduced the majority to 38, where at that point everyone went to bed.

Some 12 hours later counting resumed and Labour came out on top by 20 votes. I reckon that if there had been another count the Tories would have won.

In order to form a Government, discussions are now taking place with an Irish party. Let us hope that in the end we are not DUPed.

On a lighter note, congratulations to The Northern Echo for scooping the national dailies with their headline “Mayday! Mayday!” (Echo, June 9).
