THE INCREDIBLE gesture by Sunderland FC chairman Niall Quinn to pay for fans to make the 300-miles plus journey back to Wearside from Bristol (Echo, April 2) is typical of this extraordinary man.

I have talked to several players who were there that night and they all expressed their huge pride in having Quinn as their chairman.

The highlight that was constantly mentioned by supporters was when Quinny made a passionate speech at the airport and said "these are our people and we must get them home".

It is well known that Quinn donated the entire proceeds of his benefit match between Sunderland and Ireland to children's hospitals in Sunderland and Dublin, and needy children in India. However, this is only one of the many acts of kindness shown by the articulate Irishman.

In the often cynical world of professional football, Niall Quinn is like a breath of fresh air. As a long suffering SAFC supporter, I am delighted that we have got this remarkable man leading our club, and it has made me feel very optimistic for the future.
