EXTRAORDINARY tales of bravery will be recalled during a talk being held later this month.

Author and military expert Matthew Richardson will recount some of the heroic stories of soldiers awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal from the Charge of the Light Brigade to the Vietnam War.

His talk "Deeds of Heroes: the story of the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1854-1993" takes place at the DLI Museum and Art Gallery, in Durham City, on Saturday, March 24 at 2pm.

Until the 1990s, the Distinguished Conduct Medal was ranked only second to the Victoria Cross and earned the nickname the ‘live man’s VC’.

Mr Richardson will reveal breathtaking accounts of bravery from the Crimean War, World War One and Two and Australia’s involvement in Vietnam as well as more recent conflicts including Northern Ireland, the Falklands and the Gulf wars.

Tickets are priced at £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for concessions and £2.50 for children.
