A TOWN will continue its tradition of supporting the Armed Forces by once again creating a crafted memorial.

Spennymoor Town Council has launched an appeal to ask people to knit poppies for a poppy display at the cenotaph in the town centre.

The poppies will be displayed from mid-October to Sunday, November 19, to run alongside the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal and include the Remembrance period.

The authority has long been a supporter of the Forces which has included granting the Freedom of the Town to the Rifles, flying the Armed Forces Day Flag and hosting the Remembrance Service in the town hall and assisting with the subsequent parade.

A spokesperson said: “The town council would like to thank those who have been knitting already and dropping poppies off at the town hall, and would now encourage others to join in and help commemorate those who have fought for this great country of ours.”

A knitting pattern can be downloaded from the council website and hard copies are at the town hall.

Last year a similar appeal was launched and concluded with a beautiful display, which included poppies made by a knitting club from Rosa Street Primary School.

Knitted poppies can be delivered to Spennymoor Town Council by Friday, September 29.
