STUDENTS have been learning about the potential impact of climate change on Bishop Auckland.

School Hubs for Community Flood Risk Reduction (SHOCFlood) was a project run by OASES working with schools across the region funded by the Environment Agency.

Year 11 pupils from St John’s School and Sixth Form College, worked with the project officer Jill Essam to learn about the potential and current impacts of climate change in Bishop Auckland and the wider world and to think about how as communities we can become more resilient.

This was the inspiration for a group of students to take on an additional GCSE in their own time to develop flood resilience products for households.

Rich Hurst, of OASES, said: “I must commend the students on the excellent portfolios and flood products they’ve researched and produced.

"I hope that they can take the knowledge and skills developed through the product design process into the next phase of their lives, I wish them well with their exam results later in the summer.”
