A DARLINGTON pub has earned its place in a showcase of historic coaching inns turned 21st-century public houses.
The George, in Piercebridge, has been celebrated by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and will feature in its traveller’s guide to enthusiasts travelling from Edinburgh to London.
The 17th century pub’s position on the Great North Road caught the attention of acclaimed beer writer, Roger Protz.
He also recognised The George’s grandfather clock that inspired American composer, Henry Clay Work, to write My Grandfather’s Clock in 1876.
Mr Protz said: “The Great North Road is part of British folklore, which is still alive today thanks to the survival of these magnificent coaching inns.
“Travellers can use this guide to retrace old routes and enjoy some of Britain’s most fascinating traditional pubs while learning about the history and culture that is draped along this iconic road.”
The George features in CAMRA’s Historic Coaching Inns of the Great North Road.
