POLICE have confirmed the person arrested for carrying a large replica firearm through Crook town centre was a 24-year-old local man.

The man was carrying the weapon - thought to be an 'airsoft' gun similar to those used in activities like paintball - in Crook on Friday night.

Durham Road Policing Unit reported that the man was seen carrying the gun 'just when the pubs were closing' and detained by the force's armed response vehicle crews.

Police have confirmed a 24-year-old man from the Crook area was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm.

He has been interviewed by detectives and released on bail until April 25 while further enquiries are made.
