VOLUNTEERS are being sought to meet demand for a project aimed at tackling telephone crime targeted at the elderly.
Age UK County Durham has put out a call to get people on board the Beat the Scammers scheme designed to give older people the confidence to hang up the phone on nuisance telephone calls.
Tony Murray, of Durham Constabulary, said: “I have seen the damage this type of crime has.”
The charity sees volunteers trained to give practical advice to older people and in some areas the project is installing call blockers.
The charity is focusing its search in the Spennymoor area as well as in Derwentside, Teesdale, Sedgefield and the Trimdons.
