IT was a science lesson like no other at one County Durham school on Friday as children got to make their own slime, were attacked by a vortex cannon and even made plastic bottles explode.

That's after the Friends of Staindrop CofE Primary School, in Staindrop, Teesdale organised a special visit from 'Professor' Craig Onesmith, of Cool Science Party, who treated the children to his fun science workshop for their last day of term on Friday, February 17.

From making slimy goo to chemical reactions using household items and dry ice cauldrons, each child had the chance to engage in the topic.

Mr Onesmith, who was inspired to start the Darlington-based company after trying to find something for his daughter's sixth birthday party in 2015, said he hoped to get children interested in the topic.

All the experiments related to the Key Stage one and two.

He said: "If one or two go away and think science is cool I have achieved something. I love the kids' reactions - it's awesome to see them learning and having fun."

Year six teacher, Lesley Davidson, said the workshop was the highlight of the final day with every class looking at their own scientific investigations.

"Having someone in that's an expert is always really nice and we would like to do it more," she said.

Headteacher, Steve Whelerton, praised the Friends group and parents for all their hard work to raise the funds needed for the workshops which benefitted every child in the school.
