BUDDING young builders have been getting a taste of the construction industry after creating their very own structures from more unusual objects.

Darlington College played host to reception class children from St Mary’s Roman Cathlic Primary School, in Newton Aycliffe, who have been working on building projects as part of their early years learning.

The pupils were tasked with building their own structure from marshmallows and cocktail sticks.

College curriculum manager for construction Lisa Bowerbank spent an afternoon showing 27 four and five-year-olds the state of the art workshops which are helping train the next generation of tradesmen.

“Children are never too young to experience what is out there in the world for them and the visit will undoubtedly sow a seed for their futures” said Ms Bowerbank.

“The pupils from St Mary’s were incredibly interested in what we have to offer and really seemed to enjoy their visit” she added.

St Mary’s reception class teacher Toni Muir added: “We have been learning about construction and how we can relate it to the children’s interests.

“They have been learning about different materials and their properties and why builders choose to use particular resources.

“The children have had the opportunity to build a range of structures, ranging from castles made from Lego to houses made from marshmallows, icing sugar and cocktail sticks.

“I’d like to thank Darlington College for allowing the children to become further inspired.”
