IT WAS a cold and frosty start in North Yorkshire morning – but riders who took to the gallops on Middleham Moor were rewarded with a stunning skyscape during the winter sunrise.

Middleham, in Wensleydale, is a hub of the racehorse community and riders will be used to tacking up in all weather conditions over the last 200 years since horses were first kept there by top trainers.

Middleham gallops are on public land a short walk from the town centre and thoroughbreds are regularly exercised on its tracks.

The icy conditions are not set to last however, with temperatures set to increase as the week progresses.
