A GROUP of green-fingered volunteers have seen their efforts pay off after being named best village in the prestigious Northumbria in Bloom competition.

The Middleton in Bloom team, which is made up of villagers from Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, have been crowned winners of the best village which is on top of their already gold award status.

The judges, who go to communities as far north as Berwick and south as Cleveland, visited the dales community in April and July.

This year even children from the village Rainbows group got involved by painting stones while Durham County Council helped the group by brightening up the corner of Bridge Street and planting a wildflower garden at St Mary’s Church.

Spokesperson for the group, Pam Phillips, said: “We did not dream of getting the best village. It was lovely getting the gold but to be awarded with the best village is amazing.”

Mrs Phillips added: “It’s about community.”
