PLANE enthusiasts throughout North Yorkshire have been handed a rare treat this week.

Although supersonic jets and military helicopters are no strangers to the skies above North Yorkshire the recent unusual sight of warplanes from US Air Force has not gone unnoticed.

In recent weeks two unusual types of military hardware have been spotted practicing their craft above Wensleydale and Swaledale.

The strange-looking V22 Osprey, a hybrid aeroplane and helicopter, made several late evening fly-overs and was observed by several residents. Also on several consecutive days the aircraft christened as the ‘Warthog’ due to its reputed lack of good looks, an A10 Thunderbolt was seen flying low in pairs, providing aircraft spotters with a real treat.

The visiting aircraft were from the USAF based in Suffolk, and were conducting low level training with UK forces at based at Catterick Garrison and several other military bases.

The viewing area at RAF Leeming was full to capacity over several days with aeroplane enthusiasts making the most of the aerial comings and goings. Many of the visitors were on holiday in the area and making the most of the air activity.

The presence of the US planes was apparent with a large transport aircraft parked on the base and a row of A10 Thunderbolts and V22 OSPREYs nearby. British military helicopters were also in evidence.

A spokesman for the RAF confirmed they were based temporarily in the area and training with UK forces.
