A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital following a collision involving two vehicles near Barford Corner on the A688 between Barnard Castle and Staindrop.

The casualty had to be cut free from the wreckage by fire crews from Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle after the car she was in hit a concrete pillar. She was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

It happened at 5.54pm.

The extent of her injuries are not known. Police said the road was likely to be closed for some time.
