HELP us to fund a cure, is the message from the family of the little boy who survives on cornflour.

Six-year-old George Morrison’s struggle to obtain life-saving cornflour on prescription was highlighted by The Northern Echo yesterday.

In order to avoid fitting or slipping into a coma, the Darlington youngster – who suffers from glycogen storage disease - must consume cornflour around the clock.

Parents Sam and Pete Morrison are now footing the bill for constant cornflour after finding themselves unable to find a pharmacy able to dispense it.

Mr and Mrs Morrison said their recent efforts to highlight George’s plight were not driven by an inability to afford the cornflour he relies on to survive, but to ensure awareness is raised and he is treated the same as any other child.

Mr Morrison said: “Cornflour might only be 74p a box but that’s not the point.

“We’d pay £74 a day to keep George safe but we had been getting it on prescription and now can’t.

“It’s not about the money, it’s about the principle and about raising awareness of this disease.”

His family are now hoping to use the ensuring publicity to boost knowledge of the incredibly rare condition, which affects only a handful of children in the UK.

They are currently doing all they can to fundraise for the Association for Glycogen Storage Disease UK.

George’s parents hope their fundraising efforts will allow research into a potential cure to continue and are urging others to support the cause.

Mrs Morrison said: “This is not a well-known illness like cancer or heart disease but it affects George’s life equally as badly.

“He shouldn’t be treated differently to other ill children just because he has a very rare disease.

“This cure isn’t just about George, it could be significant for many people.

“It’s actually about the future of medicine, not just about our son and others like him.”

In a bid to help George and his family, Darlington Flower Club will host their annual Spring Fling in aid of the Association for Glycogen Storage Disease.

The event will take place at Headlam Hall on Wednesday, March 23.
