DARLINGTON will become more dementia friendly with the launch of a new initiative.

The official launch of the Darlington Dementia Action Alliance will take place on Tuesday, December 8.

A number of local businesses and organisations have signed up to the project, which aims to turn the town into a dementia friendly community.

Sainsbury’s, Morrisions, Barclays and Health Darlington are among those who have worked with the initiative’s steering group on the initiative, backed by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Anyone interested in the work of the alliance – including those with dementia, their carers and other businesses – can attend the launch, taking place from 1pm at the Crown Street Library’s gallery.

A range of organisations will be on hand to demonstrate ways in which they are dementia friendly and can support those living with the condition.

Frances Child, who works for the Alzheimer’s Society and is co-ordinator for the alliance, said:

“The initiative will generate a greater awareness and understanding of dementia, enabling individuals and their carers to feel supported to remain independent with choice and control over their own lives.”
