INSPIRED by Durham City's Lumiere, a school held its own festival of light.

Children and staff at Evergreen Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, created their own light installations to wow families during its tenth anniversary party.

The event, on Tuesday, November 24, began with a willow lantern parade led by its mini police team which volunteers with Durham police on community initiatives.

Visitors then explored the exhibits in the main hall and sensory garden and enjoyed a fireworks finale.

The school, which caters for two to 11-year-olds with learning, behavioural and physical difficulties, used the event to celebrate youngsters' work on the topic of celebrations in different cultures.

Assistant headteacher Faye James said: "Using different materials and incorporating things like fairy lights, glow sticks and UV paint all 19 classes made their own light project inspired by Lumiere.

"There was then a performance by a school choir and a Diwali inspired dance and sweets and food, an outside group also came in to do some African drumming.

"It was a real celebration of the children's learning and marked or tenth anniversary as a school.

"Because of the needs and difficulties of our children some cannot access big events in the community like fireworks displays or Lumiere so this is a chance to enjoy them in a familiar environment with their parents."
