A WOMAN with real specs appeal is in the running for a cash prize and an exotic holiday.

Jean Bird was chosen out of hundreds of people across the Tyne Tees region as a regional finalist for high street optician Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year contest.

The 75-year-old, from Bishop Auckland, could win £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas if she wins, as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 20th annual awards bash.

To take part in the competition, glasses wearers showed off their style by sharing selfies online and entering in stores.

Mrs Bird was invited to visit her local Specsavers store in Bishop Auckland to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.

She said: “I was delighted and shocked, to hear I had reached this stage of a national competition.

“My husband encouraged me to enter so it's credit to him.”

Tim Mitchison, store director of Bishop Auckland Specsavers, added: “Well done to Jean on her success so far.

“Here's hoping that she will be flying the flag for the North-East.”

If she triumphs in the 60 plus age category, she will win a VIP makeover and could get the overall title.

Mrs Bird could also meet Spice Girls singer and radio DJ Emma Bunton, who launched the contest, at the celebrity packed ceremony in London next month.
