A TALENTED young writer has been nominated for a national creative writing prize.

Abby Walker of Toft Hill, County Durham, was shortlisted in the 11-14 year-old category of the Wicked Young Writers' Award.

The national competition, set up by the team that created the hit west-end show, aims to encourage creative writing from young writers aged from five to 25.

The 14 -year-old attended the award ceremony in London on June 29 but was unlucky not to be named winner.

The 2015 award, which is supported by Warhorse author, Michael Morpurgo, was presented by judge Cressida Cowell, author of the bestselling How to Train Your Dragon series.

This is not the first time the Staindrop School student has been recognised for her writing talent.

Last year, she won first prize for her piece, 'Dear Mum' in a competition run by the Taachi-Morris Arts Centre in Somerset and was shortlisted for two of her other stories.
