THE health of residents’ feet has become the focus of a new campaign announced by a North-East pharmacy.

As winter finally kicks in, The Pharmacy, in Rockliffe Court, Hurworth Place, Darlington, is launching a foot health awareness service, designed to encourage people to take the health of their feet seriously, and in particular those with diabetes.

Six per cent of the UK population have been diagnosed with diabetes, and it is believed there are a further 850,000 sufferers who are currently undiagnosed.

Foot amputation is not uncommon amongst those with the disease.

Pharmacist Carole Tunstall said this was a worst case scenario, but added: “Eighty per cent of diabetics suffer with things like dry feet as a result of their condition as well as more serious things like nerve damage and open sores.

“People with diabetes should be checking their feet everyday and report any changes to their look or feel to us or their GP.”

However it is not just diabetes sufferers who are being encouraged to use the service.

“Even people who aren’t diabetic will benefit from good foot health,” said Ms Tunstall.

“Our new service will equip people with the knowledge and advice they need to spot any changes and care for their feet more effectively.”

The service is available at The Pharmacy, in Rockliffe Court, Hurworth Place, Darlington. For more information visit allabouthealth.org.uk
