A SCARECROW competition organised by an east Durham teenager has been held.

Residents took part in the Easington Village Scarecrow Competition and more than 30 entrants drew inspiration from films, cartoon characters and nursery rhymes.

Group winners included a football game, teddy bear's picnic and a family in a living room watching television.

The competition was organised by 18-year-old student Alice Morton, who attended Easington Academy and Durham Sixth Form Centre.

Alice, who leaves for Leeds Metropolitan University today (Sunday, September 21) to study events management, and is the daughter of Easington Parish Council chairman Len Morton, said: “There was no theme. People ccould do whatever they and put up a scarecrow in their front garden.

“It is nice and simple so everyone could take part. It is just a bit of fun, brings a bit of life into the community with a bit of colour. It brings everyone together for a few days.

“People have responded to it very well.”

As well as the competition, which ran over both days and started last year, there was a bouncy castle and children’s activities, a craft stalls and a displays of vintage cars, motorbikes and tractors.
