THE latest stage of a project to improve facilities in Hamsterley Forest has led to the construction of a bridge costing nearly a third of a million pounds.

The bridge is being constructed to span Bedburn Beck to help to create a circular trail for walkers and bikers.

It will link the walking and cycle trails to the new visitor centre, car park and the cycle centre.

Disabled users will also find access improved and it will provide a shorter route to some parts of the site.

The new bridge will be officially opened on Thursday, September 11 and is one of several projects in the forest.

The visitor centre, which is near to the bridge, has undergone a facelift to cater for the forest’s 200,000 annual visitors.

A 400 metre mountain bike trail opened earlier this year thanks to a £20,000 grant from Hamsterley Trailblazers mountain bike club.

Several other sections of the route have also been renovated.

Alex MacLennan, recreation and public affairs manager for the North East Forestry Commission said: “It’s taken a lot of work from both the Forestry Commission and our army of loyal volunteers, but we are finished.

“I have to say the new visitor centre, bridge and trail are very impressive and going to be a real draw for visitors.

“Hamsterley is one of the most beautiful forests in the region with 2,000 acres of mixed woodland to explore.

“It’s good to know that our visitors have even better access to a great café and visitor centre in which to relax and refuel after a day out.

“Currently, we are experiencing one of the busiest years and we’re seeing more mid-week visits than in previous years which is fantastic.”
