A CYCLIST who has shed nearly four stones is gearing up for his fourth annual community ride.

Michael Sinclair was 24 stones when he completed the 25-mile Durham Big Ride for the first time three years ago, taking the only XXXL size souvenir t-shirt available on the day.

He has signed up for this year’s ride and hopes to weigh in at under 20 stones by the time it comes round, on Sunday, August 31.

Mr Sinclair said: “On that first year I remember thinking: ‘What have I left myself in for?’

“The second year I really did struggle. Last year was different. I finished much further up the field.

“I’m hoping to weigh under 20 stone this year. It’s got to be easier dragging less weight up those hills.”

Event director Colin Wilkes said: “Michael is a great example of what the Durham Big Ride is about. The event is all about the taking part and the enjoyment of the day, no matter your level of fitness.”

Durham Big Ride has routes of three, ten and 25 miles. This year's is being supported by Change4Life. For further details, visit durhambigride.co.uk
