Police van on emergency call collides with car in Middlesbrough

A POLICE van responding to an emergency call was in collision with a car yesterday (Saturday, December 8).

A 58-year-old woman who was driving a blue Peugeot 207 involved in the incident in Middlesbrough was taken to James Cook University Hospital for checks.

A police officer travelling in the van was also taken to hospital with leg injuries.

The collision has been referred to Cleveland Police’s Professional Standards Unit as a matter of routine.

Cargo Fleet Lane and Londlands Road were closed for an hour following the crash at 4.15pm for investigation work.

Police are asking for witnesses to contact Acting Sergeant Darren Cawthorne, of the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, on the non emergency 101 number, quoting Event 220079.

Leg injuries from holding the brake down no doubt. Remember folks, if you find yourself about to hit something head on like this, pull your legs in at the very last second. Holding the brake in during impact won't slow you any more, and you'll only risk broken bones! :-)

I always wonder what actually constitutes a Police emergency situation like this, WHY oh why put maybe 100 peoples lives (dependant on length of trip) to get to the scene of something that, lets face it if it is a criminal act, will only result in a slapped wrist or 3 weeks inside. It is NOT worth risking innocent peoples lives just to race through traffic, it is time this boy racer mentality stopped, similarly with ambulances, AGAIN, why risk so many lives for the sake of trying to save 1. Think about it, it is stupidity and DOES NOT add up.
