NORTHERN rail says it hopes to run more than 1,200 trains during a second day of strike action this week by RMT members.

The RMT has begun a second 24 hour walkout on Northern services following Tuesday's strike action.

The dispute is over the retention of guards on driver only trains Northern wants to introduce.

A spokesman for Northern said: "We will do our best to keep passengers on the move. However, we will be operating a reduced service and expect all services to be busy.

The majority of available trains will operate between 7am and 7pm, with services on some routes finishing earlier.

"During these hours the overall number of trains running will be significantly reduced.

"We expect trains and any replacement buses we operate will be extremely busy.

"Please allow extra time for journeys, plan carefully and consider whether travel is necessary."
