MOTORISTS faced major delays on the A19 southbound carriageway this morning due to an accident involving six vehicles.

The incident occured around 7.40am near Dalton-le-Dale.

Tailbacks stretched as far as ten miles, while motorists on the opposite carriageway slowing down to look at the scene caused delays.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue tweeted: "Our crews attended a road traffic collision involving six vehicles. One male adult was released prior to our arrival."

The accident has now been cleared and traffic has eased.

It is not known if anyone was injured.
