NORTHERN rail has launched a new ‘travel safe’ team.
The team consists of 55 staff, of which 13 and a team leader will be based in Newcastle.
Their job will be to travel the operator’s network and support late night services, special events and sporting fixtures.
Northern said the launch represented a 150 per cent increase in staff dedicated to safety of customers.
Alex Hynes, managing director for Northern, said: “The safety of our customers and colleagues is paramount and Northern has an excellent track record for safety and security.”
Acting Superintendent Susan Peters, of British Transport Police, said: “We welcome the introduction of the new travel safe team and look forward to working alongside our Northern colleagues to ensure a safe and secure transport environment for customers and staff across the route.”
