TRAIN operators TransPennine Express are warning services between York and Middlesbrough will be extremely busy on Saturday (July 9).

An extra 2,000 seats have been put on to cope with the extra demand anticipated because of the John Smith’s Cup meeting at York Racecourse and Middlesbrough FC playing York City at Bootham Crescent.

They warn the last trains of the day will be particularly busy and are calling on customers to plan their journey home in advance. TransPennine Express and British Transport Police are putting on extra staff and officers on the day and appealing to customers to treat everyone with respect.

BTP Inspector Richard Price said: “York station and rail routes into York are expected to be extremely busy due to the John Smith’s Cup meeting at the racecourse and York FC playing Middlesbrough. Please plan ahead and give yourself extra time to travel.

“Extra officers and rail staff will be at the station, and on board trains alongside travelling fans and race goers to answer any questions passengers may have, as well as ensuring everyone travels to and from the game and races safely.

“We want everyone to have a great day but would like to remind people that trains are not extensions of bars, the terraces or the races; they are used by everyone including families, young people and the elderly. We are asking that people watch their alcohol consumption and their behaviour.”
