RESURFACING work on almost two miles of the A66 in County Durham will start on Monday.

Contractors for Highways England will resurface the road from Thorpe Farm Centre to the junction at Smallways.

The work will be carried out under a 24 hours a day contraflow system, which means traffic travelling in both directions on the same side of the carriageway.

Some local side roads will be affected by the contraflow and diversion routes will be in place.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-May, depending on the weather.

Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said: “When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along this stretch of the A66 in County Durham.

“Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic and local residents is kept to a minimum, and we’ll be using a contraflow system on the westbound carriageway to keep vehicles running in both directions on the dual carriageway.”
