A HISTORIC bridge in Darlington has reopened following extensive work.
Stonebridge is now open to two-way traffic after strengthening work was completed ahead of schedule.
A spokeswoman from Darlington Borough Council said drivers should be aware that the current road surface on the bridge is temporary.
Final road surfacing work will not take place until the end of the second phase of work on the bridge, set to be completed in February 2016.
The next phase of work, beginning on Monday, January 4 will see the road closed again except for buses, taxis and cycles travelling out of the town centre.
Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, the Environment and Highways, said: “I am delighted to see the bridge re-open ahead of schedule and in good time to allow for the extra demand caused by the Christmas rush.
“Shoppers and town centre retailers can rest assured that this important link to the main centre is now restored and will remain open until after the busy New Year shopping period.”
