DRIVERS are being warned of overnight closures on a motorway during two weeks of roadworks.

A 10-mile stretch of the A1(M) near Durham is being resurfaced which will mean the northbound carriageway will be closed overnight for a fortnight.

Work starts on Monday (Nov 23) when contractors for Highways England will resurface the northbound section between Bowburn and Carrville and will also resurface the hard shoulder near Carrville.

The work will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am, when the northbound carriageway will be closed between Junction 61 and Junction 63 at Chester le Street.

Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said: “The essential maintenance work is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am when traffic levels are at their lowest.

“When complete, drivers will benefit from an improved road surface along the A1(M) on the northbound carriageway, providing smoother and safer journeys.

“Both schemes will be carried out at the same time to keep disruption for motorists down to a minimum.”

Work is scheduled to be completed by Saturday, December 5.

Diversions will be in place during the closures via the A688 or the A689 on to the A167 north to rejoin the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street.
