ROAD works are to begin linked to the construction of a new bridge over the River Wear.
Work on the New Wear Crossing in Sunderland began in May and the bridge is due to open in 2018.
Roads at both ends will also be improved and, to allow this, a 250m stretch of the A1231 from before Sainsbury’s roundabout heading east towards the city centre will be reduced to one lane from Monday (November 16) for four weeks.
Work is also to begin on widening and strengthening Woodbine Terrace in Pallion.
Timber screening is being installed on Woodbine Terrace and during these works traffic will be reduced to one lane, with priority given to northbound traffic.
Sunderland City Council leader Paul Watson said: “We understand that road works can lead to some inconvenience for drivers and businesses and may, at times, cause delays, but we aim to minimise this wherever we can.
“We really appreciate people’s patience throughout the works and urge motorists to drive carefully and according to the speed limit.”
