A PERSON was struck and killed by a train near Darlington station on Monday afternoon.

Durham Police and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service attended the scene after the incident was reported at 3.09pm.

The incident involved the 2.35pm Cross Country service train from Newcastle to Reading.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "The person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are working to establish the identity of the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

The incident caused delays of up to 60 minutes to trains through the station. Services were back to normal just after 6pm.

The A1150 on Salters Lane North, Darlington, was closed and traffic queued in both directions between the A167 North Road junction and the Thompson Street East junction as a result of the incident.

Cross Country services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh and Penzance and between Newcastle and Southampton Central were affected.

Also disrupted was the First TransPennine Express between Newcastle and Liverpool Lime Street and the Virgin Trains East Coast service between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross.
