MOTORISTS are being warned that the Great North Road in North Yorkshire will be closed on two Saturdays in August.

The closures will take place in August 15 and 22, from 8pm to 10am between Scotch Corner and the A1(M) junction 56.

It will enable work continue on a new bridge which will form part of the A1 Leeming to Barton major road scheme.

Highways England project manager Tom Howard said: “This is a significant milestone for the scheme and a complex piece of engineering.

“Large cranes will be used to install steel girders weighing more than 112 tonnes therefore it is essential we close sections of the motorway to install them safely.

“Work has been planned to minimise disruption but we would advise road users to allow extra time to complete their journeys. We thank drivers for their patience.”

The new Kneeton Hall bridge will be built alongside the existing bridge to ensure continuous access for road users whilst the major work to upgrade the road to motorway standard takes place. The old bridge will be demolished at a later date.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place and drivers are advised to allow an extra 15 to 30 minutes to their journey time.
