A MAN and a child were killed and a baby was seriously injured in a crash between a HGV and a car on the A66 on Sunday.

Police were called just after 5pm to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway at Crackenthorpe, between Kirkby Thore and Appleby, in Cumbria.

The vehicles involved were an HGV and a black Peugeot 307.

The driver of the Peugeot 307, a 25-year-old man from the Penrith area, and a child died at the scene.

A second child, under the age of one, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a serious condition.

Cumbria Police closed the road between the A6 (Penrith) and the B6542 (Crackenthorpe / Appleby-in-Westmorland).

The driver of the HGV, a 47-year-old man from County Tyrone, was unhurt.

The family of those who died are being supported by specially trained officers.

The road was closed for several hours as officers conducted collision investigation work. It reopened at around 11pm on Sunday night, according to the Highways Agency.
